Save the Date: May 28, 2020 for the promotion ceremony. All 8th graders are working on a Google slide that will be used during the ceremony. Slides are due this Friday 5/8/2020 through Google classroom.
A message from The Lanier PTO and the Great 8 Committee:
Dear 8th Grade Families,
We hope this email finds you and your families are well and staying safe at this time. As you have heard, the Governor has officially canceled school (face-to-face model) for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year.
As Mr. Wheat & Mr. Williams mentioned during Announcements this morning, while the Great 8 in-person activities have been canceled, we are excited that we will still be able to hold a virtual promotion ceremony for our kids!
To commemorate their time at Lanier, the PTO will be providing each member of the 8th Grade Class an LMS Class of 2020 a beach towel. Summer seems to have arrived earlier than any of us ever expected this year, and this seems to be a fitting way you can remember each and every one of your friends at this time.
Many parents have asked what will happen to the Great 8 dues. Please keep reading to find out!
Traditionally, the graduating 8th Grade class leaves a gift to the school. Each year the gift is paid for by a portion of the Great 8 dues. This year, Mr. Wheat has identified new shade sails for the outdoor eating areas as an important need. Our students utilize this space every day during lunch, and we would love for the class of 2020 to leave their mark by giving this gift for students to enjoy for years to come!
Basically, with regard to dues, you have a couple of options:
(1) If you would like to donate your dues toward the class gift, you don’t have to do anything. That is, you can complete the survey and indicate this accordingly OR if we do not hear from you via the survey by Friday, May 15, 2020 – we will automatically redirect your dues to the 2020 8th Grade Class Gift. Thank you!
(2) If you would prefer a refund of your dues, please complete the survey by Friday, May 15, 2020.
Please click on the following link to complete the Great 8 Dues Survey: https://forms.gle/4oLAfQNQDRBUNngn6
Please note that families who paid via credit card after January 30, 2020 will receive a refund on your card. Families who paid via credit card prior to January 30, 2020, via check or cash, will receive a refund in the form of a check.
If your check has not been cashed, the PTO will contact you directly about your options.
Thank you so much for your support and patience,
The Lanier PTO and the Great 8 Committee

April is National Poetry Month, so in English, we are starting a new unit on poetry! We will continue to use Google Classroom to access directions for assignments and course material. Our first official week of online learning went very well, and I am so proud of my students for being flexible and diligent in getting their work done.

Cluster 8S Update 3/26/2020
Hi everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well and is safe. As we are all adjusting to these new situations and circumstances, I'd like to ask for your patience and understanding. We are all getting used to this. I anticipate that next week there will be many glitches and a good dose of confusion. That's okay, we're all learning. We will come out of this better teachers and students with new experiences. The core teachers in this cluster have some messages they'd like to share.
Please Note: Monday March 30th is a holiday. You may have to wait until Tuesday for a reply to any messages or emails.
Mrs. Harper-
Classes begin Tuesday March 31st. Tuesday is a Purple day, so students should be focusing on their Purple day classes.
I will follow the school schedule shown below. For example, during P1 (Algebra) I will be ready on Microsoft Teams to chat with students about their assignment. The video and instructions will already be posted. After students watch the video, we will use Microsoft Teams to answer any questions. Students should not join the group chat until they have watched the Khan Academy videos and followed the instructions. The discussion will be recorded and posted for students who cannot join live.
In Math 8 students will have their assignment posted on Google Classroom. It is preferred that they join the live discussion at the beginning of their class. If they cannot, it will be recorded and posted for them to view later. Math 8 students must be in my Everfi class to complete the assignments. Instructions for that are in Google Classroom.
Every student must already be registered for Microsoft Teams.
I am working on a Resource Page for math. It will include quick links to Clever (for Imagine Math, Everfi, and the online textbook), Desmos (calculator), Reference Sheet, and Microsoft Teams. It will be sent via email and posted on Google Classroom.
Mrs. Kilbourn
Hey Purple Pups!
What an exciting opportunity! I’m really looking forward to learning with you guys as we continue eighth grade from couches and dining room tables across the city of Houston! I’m sure we will make adjustments along the way, and every teacher is going to do this a little differently, but let me share with you what I’m thinking your English class will look like for the next several weeks.
Real-Time Meetings
Once a week, Tuesday for P day and Wednesday for R day, we will connect as a class in real-time, using Microsoft Teams. During this virtual time together, I’ll be summarizing the expectations for the week, answering any questions, and enjoying seeing your faces!
Class Schedule
As for assignments, I’ll continue to operate as usual and share all of that information through Google Classroom. Many of the assignments will be done at your own pace and turned in by the end of the week. Others will require that you log in (to Quizizz for example, or maybe Socrative) at a certain time. I’ll communicate all of that to you as the time comes.
Grades & Communication
Email remains the best way to communicate with me. I will also have “office hours” on Thursdays and Fridays when you can sign into a Microsoft Team meeting to ask questions, share concerns, introduce me to your dog, etc. I will continue posting your grades in the gradebook (at least two per week), and you will have everything you need to step up to high school, even without the STAAR test!
Read, Read, READ!
In Google Classroom, I’ve shared several resources where you can get books to read during this time. You can check them out from Lanier’s library OR the Houston Public Library (digitally of course). Get some audio books to listen to or ebooks to read as you are socially distancing. Make a book club with a friend!
I’m looking forward to our adventure together!!
Mrs. Kilbourn
Mr. Scott
Science will continue with the district curriculum. We will begin with "Convection currents in the Atmosphere, Oceans and creation of Hurricanes". We will move to Understanding Weather and Reading Weather Maps" and end the school year "Analyzing Relationships in Ecosystems". Warm-Ups, class work, and quizzes will be on a combination of google classroom and Microsoft Teams.

Mr. Scott:
The 2nd six weeks is coming to an end. The students will be beginning a new unit on Wednesday November 6th. This unit will focus on recognizing the effects on motion of unbalanced forces as well as calculating that net force. Students will learn to differentiate between speed, velocity and acceleration and investigate how Newton's three laws of motion are shown in the motion of everyday objects. Students will also review interpreting graphs of speed and acceleration from 6th grade science as well as calculate average speed from 6th grade science.
Mrs. Kilbourn:
In English, Mrs. Kilbourn’s classes recently completed a dictionary project, and have now begun reading Night or The Diary of Anne Frank. As we read, we are also learning about the historical events building up to the Holocaust and the effects of hatred in the world. On Thursday and Friday of this week, we are taking a break in order to take our Common Assessment #2.
Mrs. Harper:
Algebra: The end of this 6-weeks cycle is Friday 11/8. This means the Imagine Math Project will be due next week. The requirements were stated in the last Cluster Newsletter. Students should have passed 2 Imagine Math lessons each week. It is a project grade, and therefore 40% of their average. Please have your child log in to their account and show you the completed lessons.

Mr. Scott- Science/IPC
8th grade science and IPC will both be completing the Chemistry unit of 8th grade science next week. We will begin examining how evidences of chemical reaction prove that something new has been produced. They will take a quiz on counting atoms in chemical compounds, recognizing balanced chemical equations as well as applying the Law of Conservation of Mass to chemical reactions the week of October 14-18th. Common Assessment #2 will be on 10/31 and 11/1.
Mrs. Kilbourn- Literature
Mrs. Kilbourn’s class kicked off the Refugee novel unit with an escape room activity in the library for those who read the novel as expected. We’ll continue working with the themes and plot of the book for another week, including a guest speaker from Houston Welcomes Refugees, then begin our Holocaust unit in which we will be reading Night by Elie Wiesel. Students will need to purchase their own copies, and can do so from the Lanier library for $10. The classes also watched their projects and selected the best videos to teach the third graders at Poe Elementary. You can see their choices at kilbournclass.weebly.com/projects. They did a great job!
